The Women In Concert is in its 6th year and as in the past Women In Concert 2009 introduced some fine singers. Held on Saturday, March 21 at the Gokarna Golf Resort and Spa this year the WIC was presented as part of the Chevrolet Miles Music Festival. It was a pleasure listening to Sapna Thapa sing an original tune; the other artists who lit up the stage with their presence, confidence, musicianship and vocal talent were Astha Tamang Maskey, Esperangma Rai, Shivani, Kencho, Sonam, Sangay Trio and many others. Potpourri: 9/11 - Part 1 of 2

Love the life you live, live the life you love. It’s easier said than done but when you look around and see the carnage, atrocity, abuse, poverty and violence you do learn to appreciate the life that you have and in turn take your own hurdles in stride.

It was one such awakening for Choden while working on a photo/audio documentary with Nayantara. The shutdown of all nighttime establishments after 11:00 PM, announced on September by Nepal’s Home Minister took its toll. While the members of the ‘good society’ applauded the move there was a lot more lurking in the dark. A brand new show, the first Potpourri feature we present 9/11 – our attempt to highlight the plight of the women working in the so-called socially unaccepted areas – dance bars and restaurants.

It’s difficult to pinpoint and come to conclusions but most opinions, as you will hear on the show, is the fact that this drastic measure has affected only the already suffering group of women. Moral or immoral, right or wrong, fair or unfair – we leave it up to you to decide. If nothing else this show will most probably urge you to think.

Winner – Sahitya Academy Award – Nepali, 1978 for Khaharey (Short stories)

He is profiled as:

Encyclopedia of Indian Literature (Various)
Shiva Kumar Rai defies any attempt to pigeon-hole him. His four collections show him as a master of story telling – and very diverse kinds of stories at that. His collection Frontier remains uncontested in popularity, but he feels that his collection Yatri contains his best stories. The happy use of the Nepali language in the stories – the chaste Nepali language intertwined with the other elements of the story and becoming one with them – has ever been his hallmark.

Modern Indian Literature, and Anthology by K.M. George
Shiva Kumar Rai (b. 1919), who was given the Sahitya Akademi award in 1978, has to his credit some novels and several short stories. He tells stories for the sake of telling them and tells them interestingly, and is a master in the use of pure and common Nepali words. Rai’s narrations have a great deal of charm and flavour. The story featured here, Machhako Mol (The Price of Fish), is a simple story about a fisherman who catches fish in a hill-stream and earns his livelihood. he pays the price of fish with his life when the stream becomes torrential due to rainfall in the upper ridges and sweeps him away. The simple story is narrated with great skill.
